Step Two
This "Virtual" lab experiment is titled, "Dissection of the Sheep Heart " and the "Cardiac Cycle" Here you'll learn the anatomy of the heart and the events that occur during a single heart beat.
Please go to the following links to get all the instructions for doing your dissections.
EXPERIMENT ONE:
EXPERIMENT TWO:
The Cardiac Cycle
Introduction to the Cardiac Cycle. Before using the interactive "HyperHeart" module below, make sure to review the following steps at the tutorial on the cardiac cycle.
- Start off by first reading the Introduction
- Select the "Animation" tab.
- Select either the "Step Through" or "Narrated" version.
- Select and view the following "Options".
- Events of the Cardiac Cycle.
- Pressure in the left ventricle.
- Pressure in the Aorta.
- Blood volume in th left ventricle.
- Read the "Conclusion".
- Try the "Quiz" to test what you learned.
HyperHeart:
In this experiment you will use a virtual tool called "HyperHeart". HyperHeart was developed for use in a pharmacology course at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, in Salt lake City, Utah.
The site is a standalone interactive animation/movie detailing bloodflow, aortic/ventricular volumes and pressures present in a normal cardiac cycle. Also included are an electrocardiogram and heart sounds graph.
Tutorials are provided for each phase of the cycle, and interactive functions such as frame-by frame viewing, high/low quality toggle for faster playback, and a pop-up-menu to select the phase tutorials can all be utilized within the animation itself.
A great site to help you learn about the cycle of the human heartbeat.

View the following Tutorials :
- Atrial Systole
- Isovolumetric Contracton
- Rapid Ejection
- Reduced Ejection
- Isovolumetric Relaxation
- Rapid Ventricular Filling
- Reduced Ventricular Filling
Select the "Play" and "Forward" buttons to step through a cycle. Pay attention to the what is happening with the following:
- Pressure
- Volume
- Electrocardiogram (EKG)
- Heart Sounds
Goals:
1. Be able to identify / define and use the following terms:
a. vena cava
b. atria
c. ventricle
d. tricuspid valve
e. bicuspid (mitral) valve
f. septum
g. chordae tendinae
h. papillary muscles
i. pulmonary & aortic (semi- lunar) valves
j.systemic circulation
k. epi-, myo-, and endocardium
l. systole & diastole
m. foramen ovalis
n. pericardium
o. stroke volume
2. Be able to explain the cardiac cycle. All structures and functions involved, and in the proper sequence.
3. Explain the coronary artery system and its part in a heart attack.
