Lab 1 - Chemical Composition of Cells
Please follow these four steps:
Go to Step: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Step One
Lab One is about "Chemistry"! Everything in the human body can be broken down to simple chemicals like proteins, carbohydrates (sugars), lipids (fats) and nucleic acids (DNA). Even these molecules can be broken down to a relatively few important elements (atoms) like carbon (C), hydrogen (H), nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), phosphorus (P) and sulfer (S). 98% of your body consists of these six simple elements.

Please work your way through the following four steps for this online lab.

Instructions: Click on the following links to view the Pre-Lab Lecture Tutorials on basic concepts of chemistry.

Remember this, "Biology is really Chemistry in disguise"!

Biologist's bring chemistry to Life! ...don't tell your chem instructor I said this!

Objective
To understand basic atomic structure and the chemical properties of water, the structure and primary functions of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids in cells.

Step Two
This BioCoach activity will help you review molecular formulas and models, major elements and their valences, and the important functional groups of biological molecules. It will also let you try your hand at building certain molecular models.

Please go to the following links to get all the instructions for doing your experiments.

EXPERIMENT ONE: (Building Biomolecules and the Biology Place)

Click here to go to the Biology Place

  • Select the "Next Concept" buttom to advance through the tutorial.
  • Make sure you do the interactive "Practice" (Green Button), "Review" (Purple Button) and "Challenge" (Blue Button) activites on each page.
  • Do the "Self Quiz" before moving on to the next Experiement.

EXPERIMENT TWO: (Virtual Lab working with Carbohydrates, Fats and Protiens)

Click here to work through the simple tests used to identify sugars, fats and protiens.

  • Scroll down the page to where the brown tabs are located.
  • Play around with the tests for simple sugars & complex sugars like starch, protiens, fats and common foods.
  • Get familair with the differnt tests and the test reagents used.
  • What constitutes and + test?
