Welcome to Human Biology Online!
This one semester course is designed to introduce concepts needed to study the complexity of humans in a biological world. The body systems are investigated and understood in a pattern of wellness. This course does not satisfy the anatomy and physiology requirement of the Nursing Program or replace BIOL 2200 as a prerequisite to BIOL 2224: Anatomy and BIOL 2225: Physiology. Completion of the optional lab (BIOL 1128) is necessary for transfer as a lab science and to satisfy some Natural Science competencies. [MnTC:2]

HOW DOES THIS ONLINE COURSE WORK?

First of all, if you can answer "yes" to ALL the following questions, online distance learning may be an attractive option for your educational needs. If you answer one question "no," you may want to resolve or improve in this area prior to attempting this online course.

  • Am I self-directed, highly motivated, and self-disciplined?
  • Can I set a personal schedule (set aside plenty of study time of a minimum of 9-12 hours for lecture and 6-9 hours for lab per week) and complete assigned work by the required dates? Note: This does not include time spent on campus in lab.
  • Are my writing and communication skills better than average?
  • Do I try to solve problems and work through difficulties independently?
  • Can I read and follow detailed instructions on my own?
  • Am I already comfortable with using the Internet as a means of communication and research?
  • Do I own or have access to a computer with Internet access and e-mail?

The lab will meet online within a Course Management Software program called Desire 2 Learn (D2L).

  • We will use primarily asynchronous communication in this course, which does not happen in real-time. In other words, we will communicate asynchronously without needing to have a common time available for us to meet online. E-mail is an excellent example of asynchronous communication. So are electronic bulletin boards. I WILL EXPECT that you will be checking your E-mail every day (excluding weekends and holidays) and that your actively utilizing the online resources on the course website. A variety of lecture resources will be available to you including:
    • Media formats include .gif, .jpg, QuickTime, Flash, ShockWave, Windows .AVI, Java, and JavaScript formats.
    • Browser Plug-in's are required to view these resources (see Technology Requirements below).

WHAT WILL BE REQUIRED LAB ACTIVITES FOR THE STUDENT?

Each week the Human Biology Online Lab students will be doing the following lab activites:

  • Completing the 4 steps for each weekly lab topic.

Every 5th week of the semester the student will take an online Lab Exam. The Lab Exams will be 60 points covering 4 lab topics.

Specific Learning Objectives for the student are specified on each lab webpage.

    • Step One: Pre-Lab Lecture
      • This involves reviewing concept tutorials, animated tutorials and video to introduce the lab concepts and techniques.
    • Step Two: The Lab Experiment
      • The student will do hands on experiments at home, simulated online lab activities or both.
    • Step Three: The Assignment
      • The student will participate in a weekly online Lab Wiki Assignment.
      • The Student will particiapate in Study Mate Pre-Lab Quiz activities.
    • Step Four: The Quiz
      • The student will take a weekly 10 point Online Lab Quiz in D2L (Desire2Learn)

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS?
The Human Biology Online Lab has been tested with and supports the following operating systems and browser configurations.

A modern browser:

  • Google Chrome 42 or newer
  • Mozilla Firefox 38 or newer
  • Apple Safari 10 or newer
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 or newer
  • Microsoft Edge 12 or newer

Firefox and Safari users: The Human Biology Online Lab features have been tested with and do support these browsers for the operating systems shown.

Connection speed:
The Human Biology Online Lab requires an Internet connection with a minimum connection speed of 28.8 kbps (kilobits per second). DSL or a Cable Modem are preferred. The faster your connection speed, the faster you will be able to view this site and some of your course's content. If you are experiencing slow download times, you may need a faster connection. In this case, contact your school's technology department, a public library or your ISP.

What are the Podcasts all about?

To find the RSS Feed for Mitch's Human Biology Lab audio, video podcasts and screencasts please follow these steps:

  1. In iTunes select the "Advanced" tab.
